Description
It is an imposing geological wonder in the Quebrada de Humahuaca. It stands out for its amazing zigzag bands, which were formed over thousands of years by the oxidation of different minerals on a limestone base, exposed by erosion to create a palette of vibrant colors that contrast with the Andean sky. It is a landscape that will leave you breathless, both for its beauty and its imposing altitude.
The Serranías del Hornocal are popularly known as the "Cerro de los 14 Colores" (Hill of 14 Colors).
💡 Recommendations
- Visit it in the afternoon. The sun behind you highlights the intensity of its fourteen colors much better.
- Bring plenty of warm clothes. At such an altitude, the wind is usually strong and the temperature drops drastically.
- Prevent altitude sickness. Stay hydrated, eat light before going up, and walk very slowly.
- The gravel road has sharp curves, but you can visit the place by car.
- Make the most of every minute. Due to regulations and the high altitude, the time allowed at the viewpoint is usually short.
